A Fresh Chapter for Los Abanicos Trail Playground

Exciting changes are coming to Los Abanicos Trail! This December, the Board of Directors will break ground on a playground revitalization that will invite families to enjoy the great outdoors – right in our backyard! The playground is a beloved spot for young families, and after twenty years of fun, the Los Abanicos playground is due for replacement. This is a great opportunity to continue fun family park days!

The new playground blends classic design with updated elements for young kids of all abilities, including:

  • Multilevel activities, including slides and summit climbers, as well as sensory games like musical chimes and rain-sound spinners
  • Swingset (bucket seat swing and belt swing) to allow kids to swing side-by-side
  • Integrated “cozy spots” where kids can relax, watch, and observe before jumping into the fun
  • ADA accessibility components like a wide-basin summit climber, wide “wobble bridge” between structures, and transfer station for children in mobility devices.
  • Shade canopy that provides ample coverage for kids without obstructing parents' views

In addition to the new playground equipment, this project will address damage caused by overgrown trees in the area. Over time, the roots of several aging Tipuana trees have outgrown their planter beds and damaged the concrete around the playground. A certified arborist will work with the Landscape and Facilities Enhancement Committee to determine which trees need to be replaced or trimmed to protect the structural integrity and safety of the new playground. New trees will add color and texture to the grove as they mature.

The Board of Directors approved the project at the September Board Meeting, and construction will begin in December. Demolition, concrete work, and installation is anticipated to take three weeks (pending unanticipated delays). In January, Members and families will be invited to a ribbon cutting to celebrate the new playground!

Anticipated Timeline (barring weather or materials delays):

November:

  • Parts are shipped from specialty manufacturers.
  • Homeowners in the area will receive communications regarding park accessibility and construction impacts

December:

  • Old equipment is dismantled
  • Concrete is repaired
  • Trees are evaluated for safety and longevity
  • New equipment is installed along with new playground flooring

January:

  • Ribbon Cutting Celebration
