Rain Check: SAMLARC Sports Fields and Inclement Weather

SAMLARC’s fields are a hot spot for families and sports leagues across all ages. Our fields host a variety of leagues, practices, and community events throughout the year. With such frequent use, maintaining the fields is a top priority to ensure that they remain in the best possible condition for athletes and families.  Occasional closures are necessary due to weather, maintenance, or special events.

One of the primary reasons for field closures is wet weather. Playing on wet or damp fields can cause significant damage to the soil or infields, leading to prolonged closures for repairs. Even after the rain has stopped, fields may need to remain closed to allow the ground to fully dry. The drying process varies depending on soil composition, drainage, and weather conditions. While a field may appear dry on the surface, moisture beneath the soil can create safety hazards and long-term damage if used too soon.

To ensure safety the safety of our residents and young athletes, SAMLARC staff conducts field inspections to assess conditions and determine when they may be reopened. These inspections take place throughout the day, allowing for the most accurate assessment of the field’s playability. If a closure is necessary, staff will continue monitoring conditions until the field is ready to reopen.

Field status decisions are made by SAMLARC staff, who along with our landscape professionals, have the expertise and knowledge to assess conditions.  SAMLARC’s goal is to open fields as soon as possible while balancing player safety, field safety, and sports league seasons. While teams may have urgency in practicing and playing, it is essential that field closures are determined with the community’s long-term benefit and safety in mind.

Updates on field statuses are communicated to sports coaches directly and to residents who are subscribed to our Mudline SMS system. Click here to join our free SMS Mudline to stay updated with field closures and sign up for more amenities as well.

By taking these precautions, we can keep our sports fields safe, well-maintained, and enjoyable for all residents of the community.
